Also known as Ujjayini, Ujjain is an ancient city of Malwa in central India, on the eastern bank of the Kshipra River. In ancient times the city was called Ujjayini as mentioned in the Mahabharata epic. Ujjayini was the capital of the Avanti Kingdom, and has been the Prime Meridian for Hindus since the 4th century BCE. Ujjain is one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus and one of the four sites that host the Kumbh Mela, a mass pilgrimage that attracts millions of Hindu pilgrims from around the country. It is also home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Jyotirlinga shrines to the god Shiva.
Omkareshwar is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva, is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is on an island called Mandhata in the Narmada River. The shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu symbol. There are two temples here, one to Omkareshwar and one to Amareshwar whose name means "Immortal lord" or "lord of the Immortals or Devas". As per Shiv Mahapuran, once Brahma and Vishnu had an argument in terms of supremacy. To examine them, Shiva pierced the three worlds as a huge endless pillar of light, the jyotirlinga.
Maheshwar is located 13 km east of National Highway 3 and 91 km from Indore, the commercial capital of the Madhya Pradesh.
