Government Museum, Chennai was established in 1851. Known as the Madras Museum, the museum is the second oldest museum in Indian sub continent. It is also one of the largest museums in South Asia and is particularly rich in archaeological plus numismatic collections. Museum has the largest collection of Roman antiquities outside Europe. Many of the buildings within the Museum are over 100 years old like the colossal Museum Theatre. The National Art Gallery is also present in the museum premises, which is built in Indo-Saracenic style. Gallery houses rare works of artists such a Raja Ravi Varma.
For ex-situ conservation, about 22 acres of the Guindy National Park, Chennai has been carved out into a park known as the Children's Park and play area at the northeast corner of the national park with a collection of different animals and birds. The Children's Park gained recognition as an intermediate zoo from the Central Zoo Authority in 1995. Animals in the Children’s Park include black buck, spotted deer, porcupine, hyena, jackal, python, grey pelican, night heron, cormorant, cockatiel, parrot, mongoose, common peafowl, crocodile, common otter, rhesus monkey, bonnet monkey and common langur. The Park also exhibits a fossilised tree specimen which is estimated to be about 20 million years old.
Kapaleeshwarar Temple is holy temple of Shiva located in Mylapore, a suburb of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The form of Shiva's wife Parvati worshipped at this temple is called Karpagambal, the word which is derived from Tamil, "Goddess of the Wish-Yielding Tree". The temple was built around the 7th century and is a good example of Dravidian architecture. According to the Puranas, Shakti worshipped Shiva in the form of a peacock, which is why the vernacular name Mylai. The area that developed around the temple - mayil is meant by "peacock". The original idol of this shrine is kept in Jina Kanchi near Tiruttani.
Valluvar Kottam is an admired monument in Chennai, dedicated to the classical Tamil poet, philosopher and saint Thiruvalluvar. Valluvar Kottam is located at the intersection of the Kodambakkam High road and the Village road. The monument was constructed in 1976 in the memory of Thiruvalluvar, who wrote his famous Thirukkural, 2,000 years back. All the 133 chapters of the Thirukkural are inscribed on bas-relief in the front hall corridors. The construction of Valluvar Kottam is like a temple chariot and a life-size statue of the Thiruvalluvar has been installed in the 39-m-high chariot.
Gandhi Mandapam is a memorial, made in the memory of our nation father - Mahatma Gandhi. This memorial lies beside the Guindy National Park and opposite to Anna University, Guindy. The memorial structure resembles South Indian temple architecture. The memorial houses few statues of father of nation, Mahtma Gandhi and a small auditorium.
The Madras High Court is a senior court at Chennai. The court buildings are believed to be the second largest judicial complex in the world, located near the beach, in one of the city's major business districts. Although the name of the city was changed from Madras to Chennai in 1996, but the Court as an institution did not follow suit, and has remained as the Madras High Court.
Marina Beach is an urban beach in Chennai, along the Bay of Bengal, part of the Indian Ocean. The beach runs from near Fort St. George in the north to Besant Nagar in the south. It the longest urban beach in the country and the world's second longest. Bathing and swimming at the Marina Beach are legally prohibited as the undercurrent is very turbulent. It is the most crowded beach in the country and attracts about 30,000 visitors a day during weekdays. During summer months, about 15,000 to 20,000 people visit the beach on regular basis.
