Rameswaram in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel. The ancient Chidambaram Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in form of the cosmic Dancer with one of the five dancing halls of Nataraja. It is the administrative headquarters of Tiruvannamalai District. Roadways are the major mode of transport in Tiruvannamalai, while the town also has rail connectivity. Tiruvannamalai is named after the central deity of the Annamalaiyar Temple, Annamalaiyar.

With an average elevation of 12 metres, is now officially called Mamallapuram. Mahabalipuram was a 7th century port city of the South Indian dynasty of the Pallavas around 60 km south from the city of Chennai. The name Mamallapuram is named after the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, who took on the epithet Maha-malla (great wrestler), as the favourite sport of the Pallavas was wrestling. It has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th centuries. It has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
