Port Blair is the largest town in Andaman district of Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India. Town lies on the east coast of South Andaman Island and is the main entry point to the beautiful islands. Port Blair is the headquarters for the South Andaman, and the local administrative sub-division. It is home to several museums and a major base for the Indian Navy and Indian Air force. Port Blair is famous for the historic Cellular Jail and other little islands. In 1789 the government of Bengal established a penal colony on Chatham Island in the southeast bay of Great Andaman, named Port Blair to honor Lieutenant Archibald Blair, who was employed in India, during British Rule.
Havelock Island is the largest of the islands which comprise Ritchie's Archipelago a chain of islands to the east of Great Andaman. Havelock is situated 57 km North East of Port Blair. The island is named after Henry Havelock, a general from British India. The island's current population consists of Bengali settlers and is one of the few places that the administration of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has permitted and encouraged development of tourism, with a focus on promoting eco-tourism.
Viper Island is near Port Blair in Andaman Islands. It was the site of the jail where the British used to imprison convicts and political prisoners. It has the ruins of a gallows atop a hillock as jail was abandoned when the Cellular Jail was constructed in 1906. In any talk about Andaman and its freedom struggle, then it is the Cellular Jail finds frequent mention. Many years before the Cellular Jail was constructed, it was the jail at Viper Island that was used by the British to inflict the worst form of torture and hardship.
North Bay is a real trip to Andaman. One remembers the place more for swimming in the clam waters rather than the snorkeling. Known as Coral Island, North Bay is home of coral. Tourists are taken from the launch to beach with a glass bottom boat so that we can see the corals. This facility is provided so that who are unable to take Snorkeling, can watch the beauty of corals. Here, you can find different kinds of corals, lots of fishes.
Ross Island is about 2 km east of Port Blair and was the Administrative Headquarters for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, before an earthquake rocked it in 1941. Since headquarters were shifted to Port Blair, one can see at Ross Island, remnants of an opulent past in the ruins of the church, swimming pool and the chief commissioner's residence with its huge gardens and grand ballrooms. There is also a cemetery and a small museum managed by the Indian Navy, which has on display a collection of old records.
Jolly Buoy Island is very for under water corals and the pristine clear beach. Snorkeling and scuba diving are available for tourists, here. To reach Jolly Buoy Island people have to come to Wandoor beach, which is 30 Kms from Port Blair by road. This route is same for visiting Red Skin Island, located at Mahatma Gandhi National park.
