The town is still dominated by the now ruined Leh Palace, former mansion of the royal family of Ladakh. Leh connects via National Highway 1D connects it to Srinagar in the southwest and to Manali in the south via Leh-Manali Highway. Leh was important stopoveron trade routes along the Indus Valley between Tibet to the east, Kashmir to the west. The royal palace, known as Leh Palace in the city was built by King Sengge Namgyal, presumably between the periods when the Portuguese Jesuit priest, Francisco de Azevedo, visited Leh in 1631.

    Nubra Valley

    Nubra Valley

Nubra Valley, 150 km north of Leh is the capital town of Ladakh. Local scholars say that its original name was Ldumra, which means the valley of flowers in local language. The Shyok River meets the Nubra to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La from Leh as non-locals require an Inner Line Permit to enter Nubra. The Nubra River is a tributary of the Shyok River, which flows into the Indus River to the east of Skardu, Pakistan.

    Ladakh

    Ladakh

Ladakh, also known as the land of high passes lies between the Kunlun mountain range in the north and main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Tibetan descent. One of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir, the region included the Baltistan valleys, the Indus Valley, Aksai Chin and Ngari, including the Rudok region and the Nubra valleys to the north. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture as it is sometimes called "Little Tibet" for being strongly influenced by Tibetan culture. In the past Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes.
