    Srirangapatnam was the historic capital of Tipu Sultan. Situated about 19 km from Mysore City, Srirangapatnam is entirely enclosed by the river Kaveri forming a river island. This town is dotted with temples, palaces, tombs, military warehouses and fort walls. Some of the major tourist attractions in Srirangapatnam are an ancient temple dedicated to Sri Ranganathaswamy. LakshminarasimhaSwamy Temple, Jumma Masjid, DariaDaulat Gardens, Rangantittu Bird Sanctuary and Tipu Sultan’s Summer palace.

    Chamundi Hills is the prime landmark of Mysore city that can be viewed from any corner of thecity. The hills average elevation is 1000 metres. The famous Chamundeswari temple is situated on the topof this hill. According to popular belief, GodessesChamundeswari (a manifestation of Goddesses Parvati) resided on his hill after killing th demon-king Mahishasur who ruled the erstwhile Mysore. A panaromicview of the city can be seen from this hill.

    The RanganathaSwany Temple in Srirangapatnam is a famous temple with Lord Ranganatha, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu as its presiding diety. The temple has Lord Ranganatha carved in black stone in a sleeping posture on AdiShesha (the serpent with seven heads) and Goddesses Lakshmi. The temple has four beautiful pillars and exhibits brilliant architecture. The temple has twenty four beautifully sculptured forms of Lord Vishnu and is beautifully painted with mythological stories.

    Maharaja's Palace

    The Maharaja's Palace, also known as the Amba Vilas Palace or Palace of Mysore, is one of the most visited monuments of India attracting over 2.7 million visitors annually. It is the official residence of the Wodeyars - the erstwhile royal family of Mysore. The Palace is a three-storied building built of grey granite and pink marble domes. The architectural style of the palace is Indo-Saracenic - A blend of the Hindu, Muslim, Rajput ,and Gothic architecture. The palace also has twelve Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and other deities. The illuminated Mysore Palace against the dark black sky is one of the most spectacular and iconic images of Mysore.

    The Gumbaz is a large mausoleum that exhibits the Indo-Islamic style of architecture.It is the burial chamber of Tipu Sultan, his father Haider Ali and mother Fatima Begum.The Gumbaz is surrounded by beatuful gardens with a mosque, dharamshala, a NaqarKhana and a gateway. The most interesting place in Gumbaz is the whispering gallerywhere even the lightest sound and whisper can be heard afar.

    Mysore zoo, officially known as the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, is located near the Mysore Palace. Startedin 1892, it is one of the oldest zoos in the world. The zoo is spread over 250 acres and is a home to over 1500 animals which include Elephants, Giraffes, Lions, Tigers, White Rhinos, Gorillas and Baboons.

    St.Philomena's Church

    The Saint Philomena Cathedral in Mysore is a famous cathedral built in the Gothic style in honourof St. Philomena - a saint and martyr of the Roman Catholic Church. Built in 1956, it one of the largest churches of the country. The twin spires of the Cathedral are 175 feet in height and can be seen from miles. It has a relic of 3rd century Saint Philomena in a beautiful catacomb that is below the main altar. The statue of Saint Philomena in the church was brought from France. The illuminated church in the evening gives a spectacular sight.

    The Brindavan Gardens are located adjoining the Krishna Raja Sagara dam built across the river Kaveri. These gardens are primarily symmetrically laid out terrace gardens extending over 60 acres. The Brindavan Gardens are famous for the illuminated musical and dancing fountains that attracts a large number of visitors. There is a boating pond in the garden where the visitors can enjoy a boat-ride.

    Tippu

    Tippu's Summer Palace

    Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace is one of the most famous tourist spots in Mysore. It wasthe summer residence of Tipu Sultan till his death in 1799. The palace has been entirely built with French Rose Wood, right from the pillars, beams and the ceiling. The walls androofs are covered with floral painting decorations. There is also a small museum in the palace.
