GREEN SPAIN - ADVENTURE IN NORTHERN SPAIN

DAY 1: Madrid – Avila – Salamanca
Pick up your hire car and start your experience driving north to Avila, St. Teresa’s birthplace and the highest provincial capital in Spain. The centre of the city is encircled by the finest-preserved 12th century walls in Europe. Built in the 11th Century, the walls are over 2 km long and they are punctuated by 88 study turrets on which stocks can be seen nesting in season. Continue to Salamanca, a wonderful University town with great traditions and a magnificent old quarter. Overnight Salamanca

DAY 2: Salamanca
Breakfast. Visit Salamanca, called La Dorada i Spanish, or the Golden One, owing to the colour of its sandstone buildings. The great university city of Salamanca is Spain’s finest showcase of Renaissance and Plateresque architecture. Overnight Salamanca

DAY 3: Salamanca – Zamora – Santiago de Compostela
Breakfast. Travel to Zamora, whose most important monumento is its unique catedral, a 12th Century structure built in Romanesque style, but with a number of later Gothic additions. Continue to Santiago de Compostela and spend the rest of the day at leisure in this beautiful city. In the Middle Ages, Santiago de Compostela was Christianity’s third most important place of pilgrimage, after Jerusalem and Rome. Around the Praza do Obradoiro is an ensemble of historical buildings. With its narrow streets and old squares, the city centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Overnigh Santiago.

DAY 4: Santiago de Compostela - Oviedo.
Breakfast. Travel East to A Coruña, a beautiful and carachteristic city of the Northern border. Continue to the town of Oviedo, the beautiful capital of Asturias. Overnight Oviedo

DAY 5. Oviedo – Picos de Europa - Santillana del Mar
Breakfast. Continue East to make your way through the beautiful Majestic mountain range of Pics de Europa. Sightseeing in this stunnign natural paradise. Next stop can be the beautiful medieval town of Santillana del Mar, which is on the Northern route of the Pigrim’s Road to Santiago de Compostela. Continue to Santillana del mar, declared a National Monument. This small Cantabrian village with its cobblestone streets and ancient buildings, presents a feeling of timelessness. The 12the century Romanesque church of Colegiata de Santa Juliana is its principal monument. Overnight Santillana del Mar

DAY 6: Santillana – Santander - Bilbao
Breakfast. Drive to Santander, elegante city 20 miles from Santillana and heading to Bilbao, more recently famous for its Guggenheim Museum, but also with a wealth of history. Visit the museum. Overnight Bilbao.

DAY 7: Bilbao – San Sebastian
Breakfast. Travel to San Sebastián, the gastronomic capital of the country.The Basque cuisine is generally regarded as Spain’s fines and you will certainly be in food heaven. Visit to the market to see the splendid assortment of fish andw seafood. In the afternoon you can wander the beautiful and lively old quarter and learn the art of “tapear” or tapas tasting, a culinary art that has made the city famous. Enjoy beautiful Concha promedane. Overnight San Sebastian.

DAY 8: San Sebastian – Burgos
Breakfast. Travel to Vitoria Gastaiz for a quick stop. Continue to Burgos, which is referred to as the cradle of Castilla, or better known as “The Land of the Cid”. Visit the magnificent cathedral , which took to centurias to complete and the alterpiece in the Cartuja de Miraflores, which is truly a piece of art.. Overnight Burgos.

DAY 9: Burgos – Covarrubias – Lerma – Peñafiel – Pedraza – Segovia
Breakfast. Depart to the medieval town of Covarrubias. Continue to pretty Lerma. A visit to Pedraza into Peñafiel is worth for a wine tasting. This is the heart of wine country and will provide a lovely stop before contnuing to Segovia. Admire the magnifican 1st century Roman aqueduct. Overnight

DAY 10: Segovia – El Escorial – Madrid
Breakfast. Today you make your way back to Madrid, stopping to visit El Escorial, which is not only a monastery, but a church and a palace as well. It was built between 1563 and 1584 in honour of St. Lorenzo. Arrival at Madrid and drop off your hire car. Take a taxi to the hotel and check in. Overnight

DAY 11: Madrid – end of trip
